About Us

Enterprise Computing (EC) Research Group

Established in 2012, the Enterprise Computing (EC) Research Group focuses on the reliability and sustainability of digital infrastructure. In the UK Government's REF2021 assessment, the EC Lab's research impact in digital infrastructure sustainability was rated 4* ("world-leading"), the highest possible classification. The EC Lab's expertise spans several key areas, including:

  • AI Digital Infrastructure
  • Best practices and technologies for power and energy efficiency in data centres
  • Digital transformation and environmental efficiency in the public sector
  • Energy-aware software engineering
  • Reliability Engineering

EC Lab members actively contribute to global standards and policy development. They serve on and chair committees within leading standardisation bodies such as BSI, ISO/IEC, and CEN/CENELEC , as well as government expert groups, including the EU EMAS for ICT, GPP for Green Data Centres , and the UK cross-government STAR Committee. Additionally, they provide strategic guidance to policymakers worldwide.

Main Research Expertise

Digital Infrastructure Engineering

Our expertise covers various aspects of digital infrastructure and AI, with a particular focus on data centres. Our team has contributed to the development of key international standards, including ISO 22237 (Reliability) and EN 50600-5-1 (Maturity Model). We specialise in data centre design, operations, modelling, and simulation, helping to advance industry best practices and innovation in the field.

Energy Efficiency

As a cross-cutting theme within the EC Lab, our research has significantly advanced the state-of-the-art in ICT energy efficiency. We have developed foundational mathematical models (e.g. for CPU performance) and optimisation concepts that have shaped government policies (e.g. EMAS, GPP, EU Taxonomy) and international best practices (e.g. EU Code of Conduct for Data Centres). Our work continues to influence research directions at national and international levels.

Digital Transformation

We have collaborated with various governments to support digital transformation initiatives, contributing in multiple areas, including: Conducting strategic studies and policy development; Performing independent feasibility assessments; Providing neutral benchmarking data; Advising on research programme development. Our expertise ensures that digital transformation efforts are informed, effective, and aligned with best practices and emerging technologies.
