Prof Bashroush is an international authority in the field of Cloud and Data Centre Energy Efficiency. He advises various governments on the topic including the UK, Ireland, and the European Commission, and has provided guidance on public sector data centre and Cloud projects in the order of tens of millions of Euros. Such projects have led to savings of over 52 GWh/year of end-use energy, equating to over $50M annual savings and major CO2 reduction impact. His work has influenced various policies and legislation including the European Union’s Environmental Management Audit Scheme for ICT, the EU Ecodesign Legislation for energy efficient servers, and the EU Green Public Procurement Criteria for data centres. He contributed expert opinion to various UK governmental bodies, such as the UK All Party Parliamentary Climate Change Group (APPCCG) in the production of the report on the energy consumption of the Internet (launched at the House of Lords on 20th February 2018). Dr Bashroush serves on key standardisation committees in the field including CEN/CENELEC/ETSI Coordination Group on Green Data Centres as well as the ISO/IEC Joint Technical Committee 1, SC39, Sustainability For and By IT.
In December 2017, Prof Bashroush was contracted to serve as the rapporteur and lead for the European Commission DG CONNECT scientific committee that worked on providing expert input to help guide the next Framework Programme of funding (Horizon Europe – to succeed the current H2020 programme) in the area of Connected European Facilities (CEF), particularly around Green ICT Deployment Challenges. He also served on the EU Commission expert committee that highlighted future research challenges in data centre energy efficiency to be addressed as part of the future Horizon Europe programme. In 2016, he was appointed as the coordinator of the EU Commission Research Cluster encompassing all funded EU projects in the area of Cloud and Data Centre Energy Efficiency https://www.smartcitiescluster.eu/ (equating to more than $45M of funding).
Prof Bashroush has authored and co-authored over 70 publications in top-tier journals and magazines (e.g. IEEE Transaction Sustainable Computing, IEEE Software, Journal of System and Software, ACM Computing Surveys, etc.), top-tier conferences (WICSA, ECSA, FSE, etc.), as well as professional media magazines (e.g. Data Centre Management and Data Centre Solutions magazines). He is on the Editorial Board of the Elsevier Sustainable Computing journal and is regularly invited to deliver keynote talks at research conferences as well as major industrial forums (e.g. E2DC 2017, Data Centre World, Cloud Expo, and Data Centre Dynamics), and regularly features in media interviews. He served as Principal Investigator (Coordinator) on research projects totalling over £3.5M in the field of Cloud energy efficiency, and his research receives wide industrial support. He also serves on the advisory board of a number of tech start-ups and large research projects.
